Tennessee Housing Development Agency is now accepting pre-applications for some of our Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting lists online through our website. In March 2008, all pre-applications for our waiting lists will only be accepted online. This is a very quick and easy process! Please follow the detailed instructions below for applying for a THDA Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list.
- All waiting list openings and closings are posted on this website and through advertisements in local newspapers. Also, telephone recordings for each office give waiting list information.
- Read the instructions on the Waiting List Openings and Closings web page on how to apply for each individual county list. If the waiting list you want to apply for is accepting online applications, follow the link above or below to apply.
- You may apply for a waiting list through any computer with Internet access. Someone else may apply for you if you do not have access to a computer. Most public libraries and many social service agencies offer free computer access. If you need a reasonable accommodation to apply for a waiting list, please call the field office. Please note that many libraries require that you have a library card and that all fines be paid before you use their computer lab.
- At the top of the pre-application, select the county waiting list you wish to apply for. You may only apply for county waiting lists that are open at that time. Only counties that are open will appear on the screen. You may only apply for one waiting list at a time. If you would like to apply for more than one list that is open, you will need to complete another pre-application (go back to the website and start the process over). You may only submit one application per household per waiting list.
- Be sure to enter information in every blank. It is very important that you give THDA the address where you live and the address where you receive mail (if it is different).
- Print the confirmation sheet of the submission of your waiting list pre-application for your own records.
- Please do not call your THDA office to check your status. THDA is unable to give you a position number or estimated wait time to receive assistance. The page you print out confirms that you are on a waiting list. You will receive a letter from THDA when you are at the top of a waiting list, and we are ready to determine your eligibility. It may take a few weeks, a few months or possibly a few years depending on the availability of funding for the program.
- Please give your field office any changes in your address or phone number in writing. You can find the field offices’ addresses on this web page. If you do not give THDA your new contact information, you may miss important information and your name may be removed from the waiting list.
Special Note: You may apply for any open county waiting list you choose. If you apply for a county list in a county other than where you live, you will be required to live in that county for at least 12 months before you may take your Voucher assistance to another county or state. If you have already lived in the county where you are applying for assistance for 12 months or more, you may be able to take your Voucher to another county immediately.
